Calumet revisited

Dr. Phil Willink, Stephen Pescitelli, and Frank Veraldi have written a photo-filled field guide book on Fishes of the Chicago Region Tuesday.. Willink introduced the field guide to those present at the monthly Calumet Revisited Forum. The Association for the Wolf Lake Initiative (AWLI) and Calumet College of St. Joseph (CCSJ) have sponsored the monthly Calumet Revisited Forums since 2013. The University of Chicago Press is planning to publish the book in June. It includes 164 fish species in Chicago, Northwest Indiana, Southwest Michigan and Southeast Wisconsin. Willink is a researcher for the Illinois Natural History Survey and is president of AWLI. He previously worked for the Shedd Aquarium and the Field Museum of Natural History.
Dr. Christopher Iceman, associate professor of chemistry at the University of Valparaiso, who speaks on "new challenges in community air quality measurements in the Calumet Region."
Dr. Nadine Folino-Rorem, an aquatic biologist at Wheaton College, IL., discovered the invasive jellyfish, Craspedacusta, at Wolf Lake. She did so in concluding her work for the Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant. Following her presentation, she discussed further her research and those of others in a question and answer session.
Dr. Larry McClellan talking about those escaping their enslavement in the South and then traveling across NW Indiana, including nearby waterways, on their way to freedom in Canada. He explored the routes and locations in the region that were the networks of the Underground Railroad decades before the Civil War.
Marianne Kozlowski, co-steward of Eggers Grove Forest Preserve, who reported on work done on the Wolf Lake overlook adjacent to William W. Powers State Recreation Area.

Graduate student Abigail Rick, who is working with a team at the Illinois Natural History Survey on a project that connected Powderhorn Lake to Wolf Lake last year.

Dr. Christopher Iceman, Associate Professor of Chemistry, Valparaiso University, will talk about his investigation of the quality of air in Northwest Indiana at the April 2 Calumet Revisited Forum.

Dr. Larry McClellan spoke on current research of the Underground Railroad as it passed by Chicago and Northwest Indiana into Michigan at the Calumet Revisited Forum.
McClellan helped start Governors State University in 1970 and was on staff for 30 years.
For the past 20 years, he has been doing active research on the journeys of freedom seekers and the networks of the Underground Railroad.

Discussion led by Bill Emerson Jr., Lake County Surveyor, on the use of hydrogen to reduce local industry’s carbon footprint.

David Dabertin of the United Citizens Association and a Hammond lawyer,spoke on water issues within the Wolf Lake watershed at the December 5 Calumet Revisited Forum via Zoom. United Citizens is a group that seeks to improve the Whiting-Robertsdale community, which includes George Lake and Wolf Lake. As a teen Dabertin joined the successful efforts of his family to preserve George Lake.


Dr. Ted Karamanski, author and professor of history at Loyola University, on Native Americans of the Calumet Region.


Walter Skiba, professor emeritus in humanities, and Dr. Amy McCormack, president, Calumet College of St. Joseph, talk about the history of the college, including the contributions of the late Dennis Rittenmeyer, and on the college’s future.

Dr. Ezekial Flannery about the diet of Native Americans in the Calumet Region.

Presentation of Alan Resetar, formerly of the Field Museum, who talks about  amphibians and reptiles of the Calumet Region on May 2, 2023.

​Speakers address two subject areas, the 2002 BioBlitz at Wolf Lake and replacing lawns with native species. Dr. Phil Willink, fish biologist at the Illinois Natural History Survey, discusses the first BioBlitz at Wolf Lake, and Marianne Koslowski, co-steward at Eggers Woods Nature Preserve, addresses the second with Q&A.

​Artists Roman Villarreal and Felix Maldonado talk about street art in Southeast Chicago and Northwest Indiana, followed by a lengthy question and answer session.
