Wolf Lake straddles the Be Active
View Membership Brochure Brochure Front Brochure Inside
Ways to Be Active AWLI’s Strategic Plan and its Guidelines call for the organization to be committee driven. Therefore, AWLI’s Board of Directors strongly urges members to become actively involved in 2007 by joining one of AWLI’s Special or Standing Committees. As a grassroots group, AWLI has been fortunate to be supported by so many hours of volunteer work by friends infused with the desire to improve and enhance Wolf Lake. These include speakers and tour leaders at our festivals, presenters and participants at meetings, envelope stuffers and follow-up phone callers, advisors and many others. At the same time, AWLI has been buoyed by financial support from local business, industry, government agencies, groups and individuals. Whenever asked, folks tend to respond positively. However large and diverse has been our core support, AWLI continues to seek others with fresh ideas and untapped energy to join our mission. In what ways? One can contribute to one or more of the following committees, or invent one of your own: WWW.COMmittee plans three annual events. The Wolf Lake Bi-State Wetlands, Wind & Water Festival is held Memorial Day Weekend, usually that Saturday and Sunday. The annual Winter Wonderland at Wolf Lake Festival in mid-January attracts some 200 visitors. The annual Active Living Faire is held usually on the first Saturday of October. Past wetlands festivals began with a sunrise worship service, followed by birding and plant identification tours, canoe outings, frog calling, Wolf Lake history discussion, tree maintenance and identification tour, hiking, sailing and wind surfing instruction, picnic lunches, music, bike tours and an evening bonfire. Past winter festivals have featured ice-carving, ice skating, Sellerski ice safety competition, a presentation on restoring nature followed by an outing, Wolf Lake history discussion, Underground Railroad presentation, birding, tree chemistry and tree identification outing, ice boat demonstration, slide show on Wolf Lake amphibians, BioBlitz review and cross-country skiing or hiking, depending on the weather. Active Living Faire is supported by health groups. AWLI’s Wolf Lake Vision Implementation Task Force met monthly from March 2002 to February 2005 as the Wolf Lake Vision Implementation Committee to implement actions identified in the Wolf Lake Vision document of 2000-2001. To date under this effort, AWLI has formed the Sub-Committee on Reciprocal Fishing Licensing, developed a calendar of events, established the Bi-state Council of Wolf Lake Stewards which seeks to coordinate with others to train local community residents in restoration work at natural areas around Wolf Lake, and initiated a title search of Wolf Lake property owners. Some $9 million was spent on Wolf Lake in 2006 on two projects promoted by AWLI: clean up of the Calumet Container site and restoration of the shoreline along Forsythe Park and dredging elsewhere to form shallow areas and the deepening of gaps in the dikes. In 2007, the Task Force plans to develop a bi-state management for Wolf Lake with Indiana’s Lake and River Enhancement program. Community Meetings on Wolf Lake, initially funded by the US EPA and now held several times yearly, are evening meetings that inform neighbors and users of Wolf Lake and surrounds on the progress made by AWLI’s Wolf Lake Vision Implementation Task Force and updates participants on projects and plans initiated by other groups. Meetings are also held to encourage feedback from participants and engage them in discussions on what they perceive as current and potential problems. Marketing/PR Committee and Development Sub-Committee submits grants and raises funds for AWLI through an annual corporate appeal and at events, including the Autumn Reception and Art Show in late October and it submits annual fund-raising plans.Membership Committee promotes the organization, recruits new members, prepares a benefit package for members and submits annual membership plans.Others include the Governance Committee, Audit Committee and Bylaws and Guidelines Committee.
